The Commercial Taxes Department acts as the nodal agency responsible for collecting profession tax dues within each state.     Not all Indian states impose profession tax. The states that do include: Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Assam, Kerala, Meghalaya, Odisha, Tripura, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Sikkim. Business owners, salaried individuals, merchants, and professionals across various occupations fall under the purview of this tax.

    Profession tax is a significant source of revenue for state governments. The maximum amount payable annually is INR 2,500, with predetermined slabs aligned to the employee’s salary. It is also applicable to staff working in private companies, where the employer deducts the tax monthly and remits it to the state Commercial Taxes Department. Payment of profession tax is mandatory, and taxpayers are eligible to claim a deduction for this amount under their Income Tax return, ensuring compliance with both state and central regulations.
